Growing up, I was always interested in toy trucks and tractors. I received my first tractor, a John Deere pedal tractor,
when I was only 6 months old. By the time I was ten, that tractor had become my first custom pulling tractor, featuring a
foil covered toilet paper roll for a smoke stack, and foil covered cardboard for the engine side shields. In the following
years, countless other toys from my toy box came to feature custom paint jobs, different wheels, or some other
modifications.
Although my interest in toy customizing waned though high school and college, it was rekindled with a trip to the Tractor
Supply Store prior to Christmas of 1999. Not yet having a present for my Dad, I figured the 1/16 scale 4010 on the shelf
wouldn't be too difficult to convert to a model of my Grandpa's old pulling tractor, and would make a nice gift. The 4010
was followed by another of my Grandpa's pullers, a Massey Harris 44 with a 392 Hemi. This time, the modifications were
much more extensive. During my search for tires for the model, I came across several websites featuring custom built
tractors. I was amazed to find that not only were there other individuals out there customizing toy tractors, but there
was actually quite a bit of interest in it. I founded Tallon Custom Collectables and the talloncc.com website in April
of 2002 as a way of showcasing my projects and sharing customizing information with others.
At first, my customs were limited to my core collections, Cat equipment, and tractors and trucks from my family's history.
I soon found that others were interested in some of those models, so I built a few copies and sold them on ebay. Gradually
I expanded to building models that didn't necessarily fall into my collections, but that there was an interest for among
collectors. Although it is still only a part time hobby for me, I often have one or two models up for auction. Be sure to check back often to see the latest projects to come off of
the workbench.
Thanks,
Dave Tallon
